I have the chance to spend a few days in Cape Cod in mid January. Am I a lunatic?!! I am sure the beaches will be gorgeous and windswept but apart from that, will there be much to do? I will be on my own.
Also, assuming winter is an OK time of year to travel there, which town would people recommend?
Thanks so much

spent a few days in the cape last december...loved the town of chatham in the summer so we stayed again at a B%26amp;B called the captain%26#39;s house inn where we finally got to use the fireplace!...many of the stores were closed but plenty of restaurants can be found...walked along the beaches and drove around the cape w/ very little traffic...enjoy

Personally, I avoid the Cape in the summer. I never go there between Memorial Day and Labor Day (end of May to beginning of September... too choked with people and cars)
Cape Cod is absolutely beautiful, even in the winter. I especially like Provincetown in the winter... it%26#39;s a place where enough places stay open that there%26#39;s always something to do. It%26#39;s a town where you don%26#39;t even need a car (except to get out of town)Some guest houses have fireplaces (Fairbanks Inn, Bullring Wharf, etc.), and a few shops and quite a few restaurants and bars stay open.
I wouldn%26#39;t recommend any more than a few days, though. During a snowstorm, I love walking down the middle of the windswept main street and having a fireside brandy.
Other town that still have some activity in the winter are Chatham, Hyannis and Falmouth.
Perhaps you would enjoy a visit to Nantucket. I%26#39;ve never been, myself, but I understand it%26#39;s lovely in the winter.
Just to confirm previous message, Nantucket is great in the winter. We live on the Cape and always go to Nantucket for a long week end in the winter.
On the Cape, even in the winter, there%26#39;s enough to do to keep you busy for probably something less than a week. Agree about P%26#39;Town, great place.
Falmouth downtown is much nicer than Hyannis downtown. Nice restaurants, beautiful beach (Falmouth Heights), nice shops.
Leigh BCD,
The only thing more sinful than sitting in an overly heated pool room when it is 20 degrees outside is having to go home :(.
The reservations I might have about January would be: being bombarded by a freak offshore blizzard or the inability to keep one%26#39;s self occupied w/o external amusement or diversion.
Very calming, introspective and quiet.
Nice combo instead of the summer as stated above. I only go in August now due to school %26amp; time @ work constraints. Otherwise, you%26#39;d never see me during the ';100 days'; from hell.
Always hated it, always will.
Further, watching the Super Bowl while sucking down Cap%26#39;n Parker%26#39;s chowda and melding with the locals is tops to me.
And a beer is cold, too.....

Hello LeighBCD,
You never know what kind of weather you will get in January. It could be 15 or 40 F! But it is a wonderful time to relax and I think you will find the ';locals'; more open and willing to chat with you than they would be in August during the height of the season. You might consider staying in Eastham which is fairly central to the outer cape with Orleans 5 minutes to the south, Chatham 20 minutes to the south and Provincetown 30 minutes to the north.
There is a spa/gym with pool in the town....wireless internet cafe as well. I think there are play readings on weekends in January at the gym (sponsored by the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater) that brings an interesting mix of locals and city visitors. You can e-mail them through their web site at www.what.org and ask about their schedule. Eastham is the ';gateway%26#39; to the National Seashore. The Cape Cod National Seashore activities are limited at that time of year but you can see what they offer at www.nps.gov/caco
Check out www.easthamchamber.com for lodging listings. You might consider the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast which has a wonderful cottage with fireplace and ocean views. We admire it whenever we walk the National Seashore trails at Fort Hill. You can check out a review at yankeemagazine.com/travel/…
There are some lovely restaurants in Orleans open all year as well shopping on Main Street. The Land Ho is a great ';pub'; type restauant that all the locals go to and you would feel very comfortable there.
Hope that helps! Happy New Year!
you will love it! I would highly recommend staying in Chatham...Its worth the extra time in the car. I would highly recommend the Chatham Wayside Inn centrally located on Main St, and right across the street from the Chatham Squire- which is a great bar/tavern. My rehearsal dinner was at the Wayside and many of our guests stayed there and loved it. You would be able to walk (about a mile) to the light house and beach...have fun!
