Is there a difference between Downtown Chatham and Chatham...

Hi,

I%26#39;m thinking of renting a house in Chatham and am wondering if there is a difference between Chatham village and downtown Chatham. I want to be as close to Lighthouse beach as possible and the house I am considering is located right off main street near downtown chatham. Thanks in advance for your help.

To my Westchester neighbor,

My guess is that somebody decided to call themselves something different to be different because someone let them. Got that?

Sound familiar: Port Chester/ Rye Brook, Tarrytown/ Sleepy Hollow, White Plains/ Silver Lake %26amp; Rye/ Rye Neck etc.

Or how about ';so %26amp; so'; on Hudson - a million times over.

Same P.O., same Zip Code, same face different name. Some people have waaaaay too much time on their hands.

I could be a mile off base on this, I suspect they%26#39;re one and the same to the outside world, just not themselves.

Just don%26#39;t tell the people in Premium Point that they really live in New Rochelle. You might start a reality (TV) frenzy.

You know I had to think about this one and it%26#39;s so funny because I have really good friends that are in Chatham RIGHT NOW at there home and I was thinking of calling them to ask them this question! Isn%26#39;t that funny, it%26#39;s a GOOD thing I didn%26#39;t make the call because they gave me so many many wonderful tours of Chatham through the years that they%26#39;d be booting me from this so called ';Chatham village'; to ';downtown'; Chatham over this type of question!! Thanks Adm. for clearing that one up for us!

Adam - you are right. It sound exactly like a Rye/Rye Neck/Rye Town situation. I guess the local realtors are trying to do anything they can to entice customers into renting their properties. Thanks for setting my head straight.

To all,

Now I remember, Chatham Village makes oyster or dinner crackers- right?

Or was that Pepperidge farm?

Okay, so I am going to add a fly to this ointment. We have a house in Dennisport. I advertise that house for summer rentals as being in the beach village. I don%26#39;t know how Chatham does it but in Dennis, its West Dennis, East Dennis, South Dennis, Dennisport (how original huh?) etc. that make up the town of Dennis. They are all villages. When you look on the map of the Cape that entire area labeled Dennis is the town. IF that holds true for other Cape %26#39;towns%26#39; then I guess downtown would mean....downtown, and all else would be the village which would also incorporate downtown. Are you following this..I%26#39;m not sure I am anymore. Perhaps the realtor was trying to be more specific by using these terms that they understand in Chatham but probably not beyond. Maybe someone who lives in Chatham will jump in and help us. Meantime, get the rental address and Yahoo map it so that you can check the proximity to Lighthouse beach right? Have fun in Chatham and you can be the expert on this topic when you get back.

Hey there Adm, you made me exercise (and I can use it post holiday munching)as reading your post got me up, away from the laptop and walking on into the kitchen to see what my box of oyster crackers says on it. Well mine are Trader Joes but, at least, they state that the scene on the box was painted by renowned Cape Cod artist James W. Maddocks from Brewster. Thanks to you I learned an important(?) detail this morning. Makes me want to have chowdah at lunch.

Thanks Cape Cod Charlie and everyone else. I e-mailed the Chamber of Commerce and they said that downtown Chatham and Old Chatham village are almost the same thing. However, Lighthouse Beach is closer to Old Chatham Village but we%26#39;re talking .2 miles instead of .5 miles so I guess there is a difference, however slight!

I don%26#39;t have oyster crackers but I do have goldfish (crackers) and those are Pepperidge Farm :) Wish they had good chowder in NY!!

I V,

If you can find better than marginally acceptable (mediocre a best) ';white'; chowder in lower Westchester or Fairfield Counties, post it and I%26#39;m on my way. South of the TZ %26amp; Danbury, east of Co-op City to New Haven.

La Mondas in No White Plains served excellent red chowder, but that was years ago.....

How anybody in Chatham knows or cares about the difference between .2 or .5 miles is beyond me.

Wait! i just figured it out!!

Maybe it%26#39;s .2 miles from The Squire to Christians, and, .5 miles from Christians to the CBI. I think that instead of GPS positioning in Chatham, the townies have an all exclusive GBS.

Global Barstool Positioning. Oops! There goes my key to the city - again. :))

Suffice to say, I have NEVER been to the Cape and failed to stop in for a couple of hours there. I may bypass others, but not this town. Great place to be.
