Nantucket in the winter

Does anyone have any recommendations on things to do during the winter time? Has anyone had any problems taking the ferry over there during this time?

I think that when you travel to Nantucket in the wintertime you have to be ready for some disruptions to your schedule. The ferry schedule is reduced therefore you have less choices, and weather plays a part but weather can disrupt your travel there any time of the year. Nantucket is beautiful in the winter and very quiet, be aware that many businesses take part or all of the winter as ';vacation'; time and may be closed when you are there. There are always some restaurants open though and you will find less expensive accomadations. This also all depends on when you go if you are there before Christmas, everything should be open.

There%26#39;s a big difference between before and after Christmas. December up to just before Christmas, is fairly active - in fact some places re-open for ';Christmas Stroll'; weekend. After Christmas, everything is unearthly quiet compared to the summer. You can still find essentials, like drug stores and a few clothes shops, and one or both of the main bookstores will probably be open. There are several restaurants usually open all year, like the Atlantic Cafe. Most of the ';fine dining'; places will be closed, though. Several B%26amp;B%26#39;s are open all year - the Sherbourne Inn is one I know of. We got stuck on Nantucket for a day once when the harbor froze, but otherwise have never has a problem with transportation. The ferry runs all year, but they seem more eager to cancel for weather than in the summer. Sometimes the planes will run when the ferry doesn%26#39;t, and vice versa. There%26#39;s not much to do except read books, go for walks when the weather permits, eat and sleep. If that%26#39;s what you%26#39;re looking for (try to get someplace with a fireplace), it%26#39;s actually quite nice.

Things to do in winter-

1.Rent a jeep and drive out to Great Point, see the seals and enjoy the nature or cruise out in the altar rock area (entrance in Polps area). My favorite thing to do in winter. There is rarely another person out there.

2.Relax and have a glass a wine while watching a movie at the Starlight Theatre.

3. Live music at the Chicken Box (weekends)

4. Have lunch at one of the pharmacies in town

5. Lectures at the library

6. Whaling Museum

7. Long walks

8. Eat scallops

It is a really quiet time of year and full of simple pleasures. I love it because it is when the residents of the island emerge from hiding from the tourists and summer people. They are a friendly, funny and unusual lot. There are plenty of restaurants open and quiet a few good ones.

Ps. The ferries and planes run on time more often than not. There are plenty of options but admittedly a little less convenient than August schedules. Look at the weather forecast.
