Anyone taken an organized group tour during Fall Foilage time? We%26#39;d like to start in Boston and join a group-possibly hit Martha%26#39;s vineyard.

any suggestions or experiences?

I have not taken an organized tour as it is easy to travel throughout New England at your own pace and control your own itinerary. Fall foliage is best viewed in the three Northen New England States. All three States have fall foliage WEBSITES.

For example: Vermont has www.foliage-vermont.com and www.vermontfallfoliage.com and www.vermontvacation.com and others NH has www.newhampshire.com

If you travel in your own vehicle, you are notr rushed and you can see two or three States and even travel to Martha Vinyard althoug to take your own car on the ferry is expensive, ($100.00 or more).

If you do decide to travel by your own vehicle, then make your lodging reservations no later than early summer to ensure lodging at one or more hotels/inns, etc.

I%26#39;m glad I stumbled across this post. We were booked to travel from Australia and join a tour out of Boston just so I can fulfil a long-held dream and see the Fall Foliage in Vermont. Unfortunately our daughter required major surgery so we had to cancel our bookings. But we have our flights re-booked for next October and I was about to re-book our tour but will now re-consider. As friends want to join us, perhaps we would be better just doing our own thing. I just can%26#39;t wait to visit New England, I am so excited.

In my opinion by far the best way to see the foliage is by driving yourself. You will want to stop so many times to take pictures and on an organised tour that%26#39;s not possible. It also means you can take coffee stops at little diners, which of course you can%26#39;t do with 40 people on a coach. It%26#39;s so easy to drive and a lot more pleasurable. As the other poster stated book your accommodation very early. Some accommodation ask that you book for no less than 3 nights so it%26#39;s worth checking that out too. N E in the Fall is the most beautiful thing have a wonderful trip. I stayed at the most glorious B %26amp; B in Lincoln NH called the Red Sleigh Inn, a really pretty place and the hostess was wonderful.

If you stay at any of the Hotels in or around Boston their Concierge desks will be able to set you up with a group tour I%26#39;m sure. They only run them up until early October unfortunately because then the bus companies/tours stop completely for the season until the following year. So you%26#39;d have to time this whole trip right knowing that before hand.

If you wanted to rent a car and go on your own it might be fun. As the previous posters stated here, it would be well worth it to check out a lot of the scenery on your own and that way you could take your time and take pictures all you want, wherever you want.

Another suggestion right on this site is to click on ';Things to Do'; and then click on ';Foliage'; and it%26#39;ll give you a 1800# that has recorded info on where the best foliage is etc...it%26#39;s pretty good to have during the Foliage season.

The best dates for Northern New England Fall foliage viewing are usually the last week in September and the first week in October. It varies from year to year but these are usually the best dates for Fall foliage viewing. Monitor the Websites or the 800 number(s) mentioned in the replies above, (each State has a toll free 800 number), for the progress, North to South, of the peak foliage and the best areas to view.

If you decide to hire / rent your own vehicle then make certain that you also do so far in advance and also make certain that you or your travel agent receive written confirmations by FAX or Email or letter from the accommodations and the auto rental / hiring company. You may have to place a deposit for each of these situations. If so, then use a credit card as it provides proof of those reservations and deposits and also facilitates obtaining refunds if something goes amiss which is a remote circumstance.

Northern New England is definitely THE place to see the best foliage in the area. The leaves need those sharp drops in temperature to gat the color going. Marth%26#39;s Vineyard does have trees that will turn, but it will be later in the seson, and not as spectacular.

I agree that renting your own car and driving through the peak foliage ares (White Mountains in NH, Western Maine, Vermont) is the best way to enjoy the Fall in New England.

Northern NH is the best place to see fall foliage. Also please keep in mind that on Marthas Vineyard it can be very windy and knock the leaves from the trees. Also because of the temperature on the island, the leaves may peak a few weeks later than the rest of the region. I you like to be outdoors, there is plentyof hiking in the White Mountains of NH to go and enjoy the beauty of the region, or try a bike ride. I work at a resort in the White Mountains and would be glad to give you some pointers to help you find your way. Some people prefer to take day trips out of a central location while others like to travel from place to place while spending a day or 2 in a particular area. I have sent people on many routes and all have given me feedback about places to go.
