I saw your Christmas tree being cut here in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia last week..
Each year a tree is cut and is sent to the people of Boston. Lunenburg County, where I live, is known as the balsam fir-Christmas tree capitol of the world..
The tree this year is a white spruce--49 feet high. Can anyone tell me where the tree is situated in the city and also what date the tree lighting ceremony is held.
thanks--
Christmas tree..
Hi Blondie091,
The Boston Common Tree Lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday December 10th where this beautiful tree from Canada as well as over 50 other trees on the Common will be lit.
Every year the Tree Lighting Ceremony gets bigger and bigger with there stage show. It%26#39;s been a really nice tradition by Macy%26#39;s and Mayor Menino of Boston.
Christmas tree..
thanks NoMo...
Thank you, Blondie, and all the good folks in Nova Scotia for sending us a tree every year. When my husband and I were in NS and mentioned that we were from Boston, so many folks commented on the tree and its connection to the City of Boston.
For those of you reading this who are unfamiliar with the story, it begins on 6 December, 1917. Halifax was a bustling city during The Great War, being a major supply route for munitions and the like heading overseas. Two ships, one a relief ship and the other a ship carrying benzol, munitions and TNT were making their way through Halifax Harbor. Through a series of miscommunications, the two ships collided, causing one of the ships to explode. The explosion was so strong that it caused much of the Halifax side of the harbor area to turn to cinders in a matter of minutes, as well as homes and businesses within sight of the piers. Entire families were wiped out or children left homeless.
Hospitals were stretched beyond hope and within 24 hours a blizzard descended upon the city.
Relief poured in from all over the world, but the City of Halifax recalls how Boston was able to get supplies and personnel onto trains to Halifax in record time. They gave aid and support for as long as it took to deal with the immediate crisis.

As a result of the story that Beans and Cod related, the government of Nova Scotia promised to send the city of Boston a Christmas tree every year in perpetuity.
Thanks, edgers, for filling the last part in. Rather dopey of me to forget the punchline!
Yes--it%26#39;s a gesture of appreciation for the people of Boston for being so helpful throughout the Halifax Exposion ordeal.
2000 dead and 9000 injured.
Its quite an honor to have your tree chosen to make the journey to Boston each and every holiday season. The competition is quite fierce.. The family that won this year were so thrilled. The day the tree came down was televised and the elementary school children from local schools all met there for a field trip/ appreciation day..so, the tree in your city is quite special to us here in Nova Scotia..
Enjoy the holidays and thanks again..
